Much of the area around Leeton was designed in 1914 by American architect, Walter Burley Griffin, who also designed the capital, Canberra. Like Canberra, Leeton was created from nothing and is centred around a circular design with four main streets radiating outwards.
The 21 listed Art Deco buildings, shady tree-lined streets and the staggering 102 ha of public recreation parks and reserves are just part of the reason Leeton keeps on winning the Tidy Town and Best Tourist Town Awards.
The surrounding irrigation scheme was a massive project undertaken in the early twentith century. The Burrinjuck Dam and the Blowering Dam have a combined storage capacity of more than five times the volume of water in Sydney Harbour. The results are evident in the rich fertile plains that now produce most of the grapes and fruit in Australia. Furthermore 1.2 million tonnes of rice a year are grown in Leeton per year.
