The Koonadan area is part of the traditional lands of the Wiradjuri nation, the largest Aboriginal group in NSW. In the late 19th century the community was forced to move to a mission, a story that is told by signs at the site’s shelter. Stories of an ancient culture and recent suffering make this place alive with emotion.
The NPWS has undertaken revegetation works around the area, and many bush tucker species can now be found on site. The picnic shelter has signs that tell the story of the site and artwork by local Aboriginal people. Visitors can also see the various bird species that inhabit the area.
Getting There
Koonadan Historic Site is 9km north-west of Leeton. Take the Griffith Road towards Griffith and turn off along Cantrill Road. This is an unsealed road, which may be difficult in wet weather.Road quality: unpaved sections
