Fingal Head 

Fingal remains a rather sleepy village at the mouth of the Tweed River on the border coast of New South Wales, just a few kilometres south of the hustle and bustle of the Gold Coast. Fingal Bay has a resort, a patrolled beach, a boat ramp and fishing from both the beach and from Fingal Head. Whales can sometimes be spotted offshore between September and November or from late May to July.

The area was named after Fingal in Ireland because the basalt headland was thought to be similar to the Giants Causeway there.

The Fingal Head Lighthouse was erected in 1872 of stone, and painted white, the tower had a fixed white light of 1,000 candelas. The beach and lighthouse can be reached through remnant coastal rainforest that is being regenerated by the nationally recognised and award winning efforts of the Fingal Dune Care Group and Kingscliff High School.

Many sea going bird species frequent the headland and Cook Island marine reserve just offshore, and at low tide the exposed sand banks on the Tweed River, are visible from Fingal Head Rd, providing a delightful drive for birdwatchers

The town is serviced with a general store and Australia Post agency, boat hire, Flying Colours art gallery, lighthouse and sandy beach worthy of a leisurely visit.
