On the outskirts of Nimbin, way up high are the Nimbin Rocks. Scientifically speaking, the rock formations are volcanic extrusions of rhyolite left over from the Mount Warning Tweed Volcano that erupted around 20 million years ago.
The three prominent rocks were named by early white settlers, Thimble, Cathedral and Needle. The rocks have special significance to the local Aborigines (Bundjalung tribe) who regard them as a sacred burial site.
It is not possible to climb the rocks, although there is a spot to pull over and take pictures.
