Nimbin, heart of the Rainbow Region is the most alternative town in Australia. Situated on its colourful doorstep is World Heritage listed rainforest Nightcap National Park.
In 1973, Nimbin became the focus of national attention with the now famous Aquarius Festival. Out of this a new, alternative community was born. Many of the festival goers stayed and formed communes, multiple occupancy properties and alternative lifestyle blocks. The area has attracts writers, artists, musicians, actors, environmentalists and permaculture enthusiasts. Visitors are treated to a glimpse of the 'Spirit of Aquarius' in the main street, with its colourful facade and psychedelic murals. Old shopfronts have been converted to eateries and retail shops are decorated in indigenous and new age motifs. The annual Nimbin MardiGrass is now a popular annual event bringing to light hemp and drug law reform, which inevitably generates some heated debate.
