Iluka Nature Reserve is a small but hugely valuable remnant of a once extensive coastal rainforest. Covering an area of 136ha, and situated on the outskirts of town, the reserve is nestled at the end of a narrow peninsula where the Clarence River meets the ocean.
Strangler figs, vines, ferns and epiphytes are characteristic of this rainforest type, and are home to more than 140 species of birds. The most common to see along the walk include the Rufous Fantail, Lewin's Honeyeater, Eastern Yellow Robin, White-browed Scrubwren, the Golden Whistler and many more.
World Heritage Listed, Iluka Nature Reserve is the largest remnant of littoral rainforest, and is an important part of a network of coastal parks including Broadwater, Bundjalung and Yuraygir.
Taking the wheelchair-accessible 2.5 km walk from Iluka Bluff to Iluka is the best way to see the park’s diverse flora and fauna. Iluka Bluff picnic area provides picnic facilities for day use. Gas barbecues are located further north along Iluka Road at Shark Bay picnic area.
