Byron Bay is one of the most popular whale watching locations in Australia. The convoy of passing whales is part of the annual humpback migration, each June and July thousands of whales migrate north past Byron Bay, then return south in September and October. The crystal blue waters of the bay and surrounding headlands make Byron Bay one of the most perfect Whale Watching venues in Australia. Cape Byron with its lighthouse is the most easterly point in Australia and the perfect vantage point for whale watching.

There are many whale watching tours that operate in the area, giving you the chance to view these majestic mammals up close. In their migration back south in September and October you will witness the newly born calves frolicking in the waters with their mothers.

Byron Bay has kilometres of unspoiled beaches making surfing a popular pass time for locals and visitors alike. With its variety of north, east and south-facing beaches it is no wonder that the area is fast becoming a surfing Mecca. There are a dozen locals surf schools for all skills and ages.

From Belongil Beach right down to Broken Head there are many ideal surf spots catering for all levels of surfers. Main Beach the most protected of Byron's surf areas and the closest to town, and it’s adjoining beaches that offer great conditions for beginners, whilst those more experienced may want to venture to the Pass or Wategoes.

Byron Bay offers some of the worlds most amazing diving and snorkelling venues. Julian Rocks Marine Park is rated as one of the top ten scuba diving locations anywhere in Australia. During cooler winter months the grey nurse sharks visit the area whilst the summer months bring the leopard sharks also in summer and you will see manta rays cruise elegantly through the waters. All year around are three different turtle species, wobbegong sharks, eagle rays, cuttlefish and clown fish. There is an abundance of sea stars, colourful sponges, both hard and soft corals spread amongst amazing rock formations. Byron’s warm crystal blue waters are inviting and breathtaking! There are many diving schools in the area that are only too happy to share the delights of the underwater life with you.

Byron Bay has its own airstrip, located at Tyagarah - from here you can take off to experience what many say is one of the best views in the world! There are scenic flights, sky diving and parachuting.
