Located on Stockton Beach and recognised as a masterpiece of nature, no visit to Port Stephens is complete unless you drop in, or on the infamous Stockton Sand Dunes. These are officially the largest moving sand dunes in the southern hemisphere. The sand is constantly shifting and the sand dunes that you visit one week will have altered completely by your next visit. In some areas they measure as wide as 1 km and over 30 m high. Each year the dunes move north by approximately 4 metres.
There are numerous adventure companies that can provide guided tours for exploration. 4WD, quad bike or even horseback adds to the diversity and excitement. For those not interested in adventure activities the dunes have dramatic visual impact and are well worth taking a look.
