Macksville is a fishing and oyster-farming centre 12km upstream from Nambucca Heads. It is also a dairying, grazing, timber and agricultural area growing bananas, tropical fruits and vegetables.
Originally called Macks Village, Macksville was named after local families, the McKays and the McNallys who, along with the parish priest MacGuiness, sub-divided their land and sold allotments. It was long used a sea port for steamers transporting cedar and dairy produce up and down the coast. Prior to white settlement this region was probably occupied by the Kumbaingeri or Ngamba Aborigines.
