Muttonbird Island Nature Reserve is the most significant muttonbird site in NSW & provides great views of the coast and a glimpse at close quarters of the life cycle of one of Australia's most interesting migratory birds. Thousands of wedge-tailed shearwaters (or muttonbirds) travel here each year to breed.
The reserve is also a significant Aboriginal site associated with a dreamtime story concerning the moon falling into the sea. Note: Camping is not permitted.
Things to do & see include a walking track allows visitors to walk between the fragile burrows (1km return, 30min), whale watching (June, September) from a viewing platform at the eastern end and spectacular views of Solitary Islands Marine Park from viewing platform. The park is located at Coffs Harbour, follow the signs to the Jetty.
Please Note
Please protect the reserve by staying on the tracks - the plant cover is almost completely undermined with Muttonbird burrows, walking on these areas can cause the burrows to cave in and kill or maim adult Muttonbirds and chicks during the breeding season.
