Norfolk Island is located in the South Pacific Ocean 1440 km from Brisbane and 1760 km from Sydney. It is not a Territory of Australia but rather a territory under the control of the Australian Government. It is an island with a history of indigenous struggles and genocide. It was the site of two brutal British penal settlements. Since the mid 1850s the descendants of the Bounty Mutineers, the Pitcairners, have developed the island into a tranquil and properous island.
The Norfolk Island population is half Pitcairn stock who speak to each other in "Norfolk" (a mixture of English and Tahitian). The other half of the population are a mixture of Australians and New Zealanders many of whom come and go with the demand of work.
Norfolk Island is delightfully relaxed, friendly (make sure you return the friendly waves from the locals) and safe (no one bothers to lock their cars or houses). Although the island's principal industry is tourism because of strict limitations placed on arrivals, it is never crowded.
It is a small island, just 8 km by 5 km, with an amazing variety of things to do & see. Its spectacular scenery includes wild seascapes, pristine beaches, clear stary skies and untouched national parks and reserves. On the other hand, although it is has no highrise buildings, Norfolk Island, being a free of taxes has a surprisingly large amount of Duty Free Stores to settle the desires of even the most avid shopper.
