Overview
Bookmark

One hundred years ago, Pooncarie thrived as a port serving the stations further upstream, such as Wilcannia. Today, the sleepy township of 48 people has an unhurried ambience and the friendly locals are happy to spend some time with curious strangers.

The surrounds of Pooncarie are semi-arid with outback landscape rich in eucalypt woodlands. The Darling Anabranch Lakes is a series of nearby waterways, across the Darling River; Yartla Lake, Lake Mindona, Popio Lake, Popiltah Lake, Nialia Lake, Yelta lake, Nearie Lake, Warrawenia lake and Lake Milkengay make up the series.
