Silverton is an iconic Australian town in the Outback of Far Western NSW, just 25km northwest of Broken Hill, and is easily accessible via sealed roads.
Silverton had a brief but spectacular career as a silver mining town in the 1880s, peaking in 1885 but falling into a serious decline by 1889 as larger, wealthier mines in Broken Hill became more successful. To call Silverton a ghost town would wrong, as there is still a population of around 50 people.
While you may not realise it, youve probably already seen a fair bit of Silverton. Its appeared in over 140 films and commercials, including Bryan Brown's Dirty Deeds, Mad Max II and Priscilla, Queen of the Desert.
One of the most famous images of Silverton is its distinctive and much-photographed hotel. From here you can walk around the ruins of the town, mostly rubble but with the odd wall still standing.
Small signs at each site indicate the nature of the building that once stood there and it's a very nice walk at sunset, when the red hues of the earth and bricks are most vivid. Other local attractions include Mundi Mundi Lookout and Umberumberka Reservoir.
There are several popular art galleries; out the front of Peter Brownes gallery youll find the painted VW beetles, and The Gaol and Courthouse has a fine collection of relics and documents.
With haphazardly placed buildings full of character, wide streets, a famous pub and evocative scenery; Silverton is the ideal image of an outback town.
