Sometimes referred to as the Silver City, Broken Hill is smack bang in the middle of nowhere. With a reputation for a vibrant arts scene, jaw dropping scenery and grand historic buildings; Broken Hill is a unique Outback town which must be seen to be believed.
Founded in 1883 by a Boundary Rider named Charles Rasp, who initially mistook the silver and ore deposits for tin, Broken Hill has one of the biggest deposits of Silver in the world today.
The vast semi-arid landscape, while parched, is remarkably beautiful. The striking earthy tones have inspired many an artist, and in 1993 the Sculpture Symposium – 12 unique sandstone sculptures set on a majestic hilltop – was created. It’s rough, rugged, quirky and truly fascinating.
Local tour companies can take you on a 4WD tour around the region – stopping at points of interest including local museums, mines, Royal Flying Doctor Service, School of the Air, The Sculpture Symposium, nature walks, heritage drives and 5 national parks.
Of particular note are a diverse number of art galleries located around town, the most famous being the renowned gallery of one of Australia's favourite artists, Pro Hart. Visitors can also take in the spectacular Mutawintji Historic Reserve, which contains one of the best Aboriginal rock art collections in NSW.
Aside from the obvious historic and artistic appeal, you’ll never go thirsty in Broken Hill as its home to an incredible number of pubs! Local accommodation includes guesthouses, miners cottages, caravan parks and backpacker hostels.
