South of Wollongong and north of Kiama, Albion Park is situated in the Shellharbour region near Lake Illawarra.
The term 'Albion', is the most ancient name of Great Britain. Currently Albion Park has a population of 20,000. Albion Park is bordered by the Illawarra escarpment in the west, Dapto in the North, Kiama in the South and Shellharbour in the East.
In order to avoid a the highest parts of the ridge between Albion Park and Minnamurra, the railway needed to keep closer to the shore of Lake Illawarra. After the opening of railway station, 2 km to the east, in 1887, a new town grew up next to it, now known as Albion Park Rail. It is now the larger suburb.
