Wollongong is the only point on the eastern coast of Australia which has two lighthouses.

The lighthouse was built in 1871, is situated in the Belmore Basin on the southern breakwater. The height of tower 12.8 metres. This now disused lighthouse was initially powered by vegetable oils and in the 1910's by gas.
It was a prefabricated structure. A larger, improved lighthouse on the headland replaced it in the 1930's. There is no access inside the lighthouse, however it is a popular place for a picnic.
