The town of Thirroul, once a coalmining settlement, has a village-like aspect to it and is situated in between Woonona and Austinmer, around an hour and a half from Sydney. It has become a desirable and popular commuter region for Sydneysiders and makes for a quiet beachside retreat.
Thirroul boasts a great surfing beach, which in summer is popular with locals and Sydneysiders alike. Opposite the promenade and parkland is Thirroul Pool. The town is also the home of Iron Men, Darren and Dean Mercer. Thirroul Beach is the resting place of the famous shipwreck Amy, which was wrecked off the coast of Thirroul in 1898. For a perfect picnic day out head to Thirroul Beach Reserve and the neighbouring Tingara Park which provide quiet shady picnic grounds.
The town is a thriving centre for culture and arts, so make you way to such places as Beach Art Gallery or the Thirroul Antique Shop. The Oskar Wild Bookstore is worth a visit to browse its wares or sip a coffee in the coffee shop.
Time a visit to Thirroul to coincide with the annual Thirroul Seaside & Arts Festival. Held in April, the Festival is a fabulous mixture of performing arts and visual entertainment complimented by a range of street performers doing theatre and live music, market stalls, competitions and exhibitions, carnival rides and activities for the kids food and a whole lot more with free entry.
