Discover Helensburgh, one of the first towns after the Royal National Park, and the gateway to the Illawarra only 50 minutes from Sydney. Bask in the more relaxed pace of life that Helensburgh offers, away from the city bustle, but close enough to still utilise its amenities. The population is around 5000, with plenty of facilities; local clubs, pub, sporting facilities, churches, schools and shopping center.
It has become a popular location for Sydney commuters because of its close proximity to the City and excellent transport options. Sydneysiders are attracted by the wonderful mix of bush, beach, culture and peace.
The first settlement was largely a tent town of railway workers engaged on the construction of the Illawarra line. While drilling for the railway in 1884, coal was discovered and established the town.
See the spectacular Sri Venkateswara Temple, a major Hindu temple or the dramatic waterfalls and lush bushland surrounds at Kelly's Falls. The walk to the Falls is quite pleasant and takes in some of the stunning bushland surrounds of the area. Another worthwhile walk is the Wodi-Wodi Walking Track. A 6.5km long day walk through sandstone vegetation with panoramic views of the area.
