Waratah is a north-western residential suburb of the city of Newcastle closely bordered by Georgetown. Waratah was once a major Municipality that had its own industrial base, a large colliery bearing its name. The largest industry in Waratah today is the Commonwealth Steel Coy, which adjoins the railway.

Waratah West is mainly a residential area with an abundance of parklands, recreational areas and borders the University. There are four schools in the suburb and a few shops and businesses.
