Pokolbin, at the heart of the Hunter Valley, is Australia oldest commercial wine region. With a staggering 120 wineries, and home to award-winning Hunter Valley Gardens, Pokolbin is popular for a short break or day trip.
Pokolbin has been a wine lovers paradise since the mid 1800s. Wine grapes were first planted in the area in the 1870s but development was relatively slow and uneven until the 1970s, when Australian winemaking truly spread its wings.
In addition to the long-established names like Drayton's, McWilliams Tempus Two, Lindemans, Tulloch, Lake's Folly and Tyrrell's, there are also a number of new plantings such as Brokenwood, Don Francois, Allandale, and Petersons.
Situated only 150km (2.5hrs) north of Sydney, the famous Lower Hunter Valley wine region offers an excellent selection of country resorts, golfing resorts, motels and guest houses and hostels to suit every taste and budget.
