The region had a difficult start with vineyards, first planted after the Great War under the soldier settler scheme, surrendering to the economic disaster of the Great Depression. However, larger vineyards such as Tullochs, Elliotts and Wyndham Estate bought the financially crippled soldier lots enabling the vineyards to remain productive and supply wineries outside the region.
The vineyards are in a cluster between the villages of Broke and Bulga and just south of Broke. The Wollombi Brook, a tributary of the Goulburn River, courses through this gently undulating country that is back-dropped by the Brokenback Range on its south western edge.
The climate is warmer than the Lower Hunter and its soils more fertile, requiring control of vine vigor. Most rain falls in the growing season and during the harvest which can cause mechanical damage and rot.
Despite the challenging climate, particularly during the harvest, the Broke Forwich region produces a host of fine wines. Chardonnay, Semillon and Traminer are particularly pleasant.
