For decades, Kurri Kurri has been the centre of the coalfields in the Hunter Valley. The work of miners is dangerous and for a long time the town and its people reflected the temporary nature of this occupation.
More recently the town has a modern shopping area and a number of new sub-divisions have been established, with many fine modern homes that contrast with the cottages in the older sections of the town. With the arrival of the giant Alcan Smelter, rapidly expanding clothing industries, as well as other smaller Industries, Mines and Power Stations, Kurri Kurri has an increased industrial and economically stable future.
Kurri Kurri has many historical attractions including churches, galleries and the Kurri Kurri Cemetery which includes mining monuments that honour those who were killed working in the mines.
