The Southern Highlands Wine Region is situated between Canberra and Sydney around the towns of Mittagong, Bowral and Berrima. Throughout the regions history, the Southern Highlands were mainly dedicated to sheep grazing, dairy and horse studs. However, more recently the region has expanded and more innovative production has been allowed. Today, alpaca farms, plant nurseries, olive groves and vineyards can be found throughout the area.

The Southern Highlands is well suited to the production of cool climate wines due to its elevated, hilly and misty terrain. This region is quite recent specialising in handcrafted wines in small boutique wineries and vineyards. The region so far, is doing well with its production of white varieties.

Harvest Time: Late March to early May.

Tourism is very important to the survival of the wine region. The Southern Highlands is tactically located close to the south coast and major cities. This makes it very a very popular area for visitors. The region provides many antique shops, bookshops, cellar doors, accommodation and fantastic restaurants that use the local produce of the region.
