Originally opened up by the great Australian born explorer Hamilton Hume, the country around Yass holds some of the finest agricultural land in Australia. Located 57km North of Australia's capital Canberra, the region is also known for its award winning cool climate wines. Yass is located in a scenic undulating valley on the Yass River, which is a tributary of the Murrumbidgee and in close proximity to Burrinjuck Dam, 262km from Sydney.

Yass boasts many fine historic buildings, and is also known for water sports, fishing, hiking, camping, caving, art, antiques, craft and many recreation grounds that provide many hours of fun for the visitor, some of the most popular are located near the small hamlet of Wee Jasper, 54km South West.

National Trust Property Cooma Cottage, 3km from Yass, is the starting point for the fully sign-posted, 440km Hume & Hovell Walking Track and is also open to the public.

Yass Show and Rodeo is held in March, the Wee Jasper Festival and the Murrumbateman Field Days are held in October, the Cool Climate Wine Show is held in September and The Dairy Farmer's Yass River Festival is held in November.
