Beneath the huge monolith that is Mount Tennent, is the oldest settlement in Canberra, the village of Tharwa. If you’re looking for a tranquil escape while in the capital, then Tharwa and surrounds is it. Enjoy a piece of history and visit the old Tharwa School House, the 1922 general store (still in operation), Saint Edmund's Church, Tharwa Bridge, Cuppacumbalong Cemetery and Cuppacumbalong Craft Centre.
The village itself is located on the banks of the Murrumbidgee River, making it a must for those interested in nature and history. Bush walking is also a popular pastime and many of Canberra’s most famous hikes start around or in the vicinity of Thawa. The Corin Forest Recreation visitor centre is based in Tharwa, and the rangers are always happy to give out advice.
By following the scenic and clearly sign posted Tourist Route 5 most of the natural attractions and places of interest will be on route.
