Situated to the north-west of Canberra is Belconnen, a suburb of over 80 000 people. Often noted as Canberra's second capital, the area comprises of 26 suburbs; Aranda, Belconnen Town Centre, Bruce, Charnwood, Cook, Dunlop, Emu Ridge, Evatt, Florey, Fraser, Flynn, Giralang, Hawker, Higgins, Holt, Kaleen, Latham, Lawson, Macgregor, Macquarie, McKellar, Melba, Page, Scullin, Spence and Weetangera.
The Belconnen area surrounds the artifical Lake Ginninderra and is home to the University of Canberra, Canberra Institute of Technology (CIT) campus, Canberra Stadium, the Australian Institute of Sport, Bruce Indoor Stadium and a Calvary hospital.
