Tenterfield, 715 km north-east of Sydney and 275 km south of Brisbane. It is situated in a valley 882 metres above sea-level at the northern end of the New England Tablelands in an area of rugged mountains. It proclaims itself 'The Birthplace of the Nation' as Sir Henry Parkes chose this spot to deliver his famous Federation speech in 1889, which led to the establishment of Australia. The Federation of all Australian States on January 1st 1901.

The Tenterfield area is devoted to sheep and cattle though orchards, farm crops, and a silica mine. Tenterfield now promotes a growing tourism sector. These elements all contribute to the local economy.

Following mapped walks close to the town centre will reveal many stately old wooden and brick houses, the Old Courthouse, Police Station with gaol, the Railway Station, the beautifully built Convent and much more. The area surrounding the town has State Forests and National Parks. The Mt.McKenzie lookout is situated high above the town, providing magnificent views.

Visit the beautiful National Parks or State Forests. Bald Rock, Boonoo Boonoo, Girraween, Sundown, Tooloom and Basket Swamp which are all within easy or comfortable driving distance of Tenterfield. Lyrebirds, kangaroos, wallabies and platypus are all to be seen in their natural environment among pockets of ancient rainforest and vast stands of majestic eucalypts.

  • Rich volcanic soil and high altitudes bring climatic conditions that are more than suitable to the production of excellent wines. Varietal grapes including Chardonnay, Merlot and Shiraz flourish. Most wineries have cellar door sales and you are invited to visit local vineyards whilst in Tenterfield and sample the many classic wines of the Granite Belt region.
