The Broome and Kimberley regions of WA offer an untamed wilderness where red earth contrasts with pristine white, sandy beaches and vast gorges and majestic waterfalls devour the endless landscape. Visitors to this unspoilt region will love the chilled-out vibe of Broome, the vast array of natural wonders like the Bungle Bungles and Mitchell Falls and the rugged Kimberley terrain that offers a truly unique Australian adventure.
Broome is known as the secret pearl of WA and is the gateway to The Kimberley. This exotic town owes its vibrant, multicultural mix to its famous pearling history when Japanese, Filipino and Malay pearl divers arrived in droves seeking their fortune. Today, this vibrant town offers a uniquely laid back atmosphere and colourful culture and is a Mecca for artists, musicians and writers alike.
Broome's Cable Beach is renowned as one of the most stunning beaches in the world, with twenty-two kilometers of pristine white sand - an ideal and safe environment for swimming and relaxation. For a truly unique experience, try the sunset camel rides that operate daily along the beach, followed by a mango daiquiri as the sun sets over the sea. Caution is required for swimming in the ocean between November and March when stingers may be present.
A must-see natural phenomenon of this area is Broome’s staircase to the moon. When the full moon reflects off the exposed mudflats at Roebuck Bay at extremely low tides, it creates a beautiful optical illusion of a staircase reaching to the moon. This occurs March through to October.
Broome has a tropical climate of two distinct seasons, 'the wet' and 'the dry'. The 'wet season' officially commences in October but most of the annual rainfall for Broome is, on average, from January through to March.
There is a great assortment of accommodation in Broome, with stunning hotels, resorts and eco retreats to choose from. For the budget traveller, there's a good selection of hostels. Broome’s peak tourism period is winter and visitors are advised to book accommodation well-ahead during this time to avoid disappointment.
Famous for its wide skies and unique landscape, The Kimberley is one of the world's last great wilderness areas and spans a vast region of more than 400,000 square kilometers.
Derby, on the edge of King Sound is the place to stock up before venturing into this red-earth country. The Kimberley is a four wheel drive adventurer’s delight and the rugged terrain and picturesque coastlines create a perfect mix of seclusion and majestic landscapes.
The most challenging four wheel driving terrain is the legendary Gibb River Road between Broome and Kununurra. This 660km dirt track road is situated amongst some of the most rugged country in Australia and visitors are rewarded with spectacular wildlife and stunning gorges.
Not to be missed is the Purnululu National Park, where the beehive-like domes of the Bungle Bungles rise out of the landscape producing an awe-inspiring sight. This National park is also home to Lake Argyle, which is so large it can be classified as an inland sea. Boat cruises on the lake are the best way to experience its brilliant scenery and native wildlife.
Although there are limited facilities in Purnululu National Park and no fixed accommodation, there are camping facilities at Walardi or Kurrajong Camp with both sites having toilets and water. Petrol and supplies are available from nearby Turkey Creek.
Another must-see is The Mitchell Falls, one of the most photographed attractions of the Kimberley. Though accessing the area can be a little challenging, visitors won’t be disappointed. The clear streams and pools, shady pockets of rainforest, amazing waterfalls, and incredible views will certainly be a highlight of any Kimberley adventure.
There is a plethora of choice when it comes to exploring this stunning untamed area. Whether you choose a self-drive adventure, guided tour, scenic flight or cruise, the Kimberley region offers a unique holiday experience you will not soon forget...
