In February 1999, 450 protected areas including national parks covered 7 029 319 hectares - just over four percent of Queensland. In Queensland, the Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service has the task of deciding which places should become national parks and how best to manage the parks to protect their special values.
Legislation protects national parks so they can be passed intact to future generations. Potentially damaging activities are controlled by permit. Some national parks have global conservation significance and have been placed on the World Heritage list. Fraser Island is a World Heritage Area.
